June Seminar & Social! Plus photos...

Summer is here! Take a break from your busy day and join us for our Summer Social Event and roundtable discussion on Thursday, June 24th!

This is an opportunity for VALL members to get together, share stories and summer plans, and enjoy a fantastic BBQ lunch!  We will be introducing next year's Executive, announcing the new Lifetime Members and catching up with many of our Honoured Members! A photographer will be available to take individual and group photos as well, so if you have been thinking about updating your VALL profile with your picture or if you'd just like a shot with your friends and colleagues, this the time to do it. 

Reminder: Applications for Peter Bark Bursary deadline March 1, 2010

Peter Bark Bursary

The Peter Bark Professional Development Bursary was established by VALL to commemorate Peter Bark and his contribution to VALL and law librarianship. The Bursary assists VALL members demonstrating financial need in attending meetings of the Canadian Association of Law Librarians or other law library associations, continuing education workshops or other professional development. The fund is sustained by donations from individuals, law book publishers and grants from VALL.

Guidelines for applicants

Value:  Bursaries up to a maximum of $1,500 per successful applicant may be awarded per year. 

Eligibility: Applicants will have been members of VALL for a minimum of one year. Members of the current executive are eligible to apply.

Financial circumstances of applicant(s) will be considered.

Preference will be given to applicants attending a professional conference for the first time or who have conference responsibilities or who are active in VALL or in the law library community.

This seminar provides an understanding of the business of law from the Administrator’s perspective.  It develops your capacity to think and act strategically in your library by focusing on the business models and latest trends and practices in law firm Administration and challenges facing Administrators in today’s economy.  The goal is to enable both new and experienced law library professionals to develop a working knowledge of the following areas and to be comfortable discussing financial and administrative decisions:

October edition of the VALL Membership Directory 2009-2010 now available

The first edition of the printable (and searchable) PDF version of the VALL Membership Directory 2009-2010, current to October 30, 2009, is now available on the VALL website.   The PDF is searchable this year using the Adobe Reader's find box.

Members can access the directory under Member Resources.  Please note that you will need to sign in to the website in order to access the file.

If you find any errors or omissions, please notify Katherine Melville so the database can be updated.  Also, please take this opportunity to make sure your own profile is displaying your current information on this website.  The next printable directory will be published in February 2010.

Please join us as we welcome Guy Robertson, disaster planning and risk management consultant for libraries, archives and information centres, to the first VALL Seminar of the 2009-2010 year. Guy graduated from UBC’s School of Librarianship in 1981 and for over 20 years has been active in preparing organizations for contingencies of all kinds.   His current projects include a business continuity plan, an anti-terrorist / anti-sabotage plan, a privacy and information security program, and the development of procedures to combat money laundering. In addition to his career as a consultant, Guy teaches at SLAIS, UBC, and at Langara...

VALL Lunch on April 16, 2009: Who's Lying and Who's Telling the Truth: How does a Judge Determine Credibility

Please join us as we welcome Madam Justice Susan A. Griffin, previously senior litigation partner with Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP. Madam Justice Griffin was appointed judge of the British Columbia Supreme Court on February 19, 2008. She joined FMC's Vancouver office in 1999, and served as Co-Chair of the firm's National Litigation & Dispute Resolution Group until her appointment to the bench. During that time, she developed a strong reputation as a skilled and highly professional advocate. Throughout her career, she has appeared before all levels of courts, and in a wide variety of practice areas. In addition to her courtroom experience, Madam Justice Griffin acted as counsel to a judicial commission, annually edited a leading manual for civil practitioners, taught every year at a respected advocacy workshop and has appeared as guest lecturer in courses designed for the education of the judges.
