This guide is designed to help SFU researchers looking for court records such as trial transcripts, affidavits, exhibits, and other documents associated with a case but *other than the main case law/judgment*. This is a research question I frequently receive.

I'm hoping the guide might be of use to others as well, including the public. Accordingly, if you have any have any suggestions for additional content, or notice a point that needs correcting (!), I'd be grateful to hear it. You can email me directly:

2017 Gov Info Day at the SFU Harbour Center Campus

GovInfo Day is Friday, April 28th and will be held at SFU Vancouver (room 7000) from 8:45 - 4:30. This year's program (agenda attached) consists of speakers from Library and Archives Canada, Environment Canada, BC STATs and SFU.

New for this year, we are hosting the PechaKucha/Cool Tools session. If you're interested in participating in this segment and have a tip, tool or resource (related to government or legal information or data) you want to show case in in 3-5 minutes, please indicate so in your registration.

I'll also be organizing a no-host social event after sessions conclude. You'll be asked to indicate your interest when you register.

Thanks to the support of SFU Library, GovInfo Day remains free but registration is required since space is limited. If, after registering, you are unable to attend, please let me know as soon as possible.

Government yet to decide on proposal to wean Parliament from costly paper-based publishing

An obscure statute dating from Confederation has Parliament frozen in time, forcing the government to print every new law on old-fashioned paper.

Bureaucrats want to ditch those rules, end the costly printing and make digital versions the new standard — but the Liberal government has yet to decide whether to break with tradition.

At issue is the Publication of Statutes Act, conceived in the 19th century, which requires the Queen's Printer to publish new laws passed by Parliament in an annual compendium that must be printed on quality paper.

The legislation has never been overhauled. Although Justice Canada publishes the laws online as well, the digital versions aren't considered official.

CALL Webinar: Uncovering UN Treaties

This session will provide an introduction to the UN Treaty Website. Participants will learn about the main databases available from the UN Treaty Website: the UN Treaty Series and the Multilateral Treaties deposited with the Secretary-General, and how best to search them. Additionally, participants will be introduced to a few other UN publications and websites helpful in treaty research.

Susan Goard has worked at the Dag Hammarskjold Library at the United Nations headquarters in New York since 2013 where she is the law librarian and training coordinator. Prior to working at the DHL, she worked at the library of the Supreme Court of Canada, and library of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (now Global Affairs Canada).

Please join VALL for our March lunchtime seminar, "American Court Structures, Case Law and Commentary" with guest speaker Sarah Richmond.

Sarah Richmond is the Library Manager/ Research Lawyer at Alexander Holburn Beaudin + Lang LLP. She is also currently president of VALL and co-chair of the BCLMA’s KM subsection. Prior to her position at AHBL, Sarah completed her MLIS at Western University in London, articled at a mid-size law firm in Ottawa, and completed her LL.B. at the University of Windsor. She was called to the BC Bar in December 2013 after transferring from Ontario. As part of her role as Library Manager/Research Lawyer at AHBL, Sarah enjoys training the articling and summer students on legal research resources.

This seminar will begin with an introduction to US court structures, judicial selection methods and an overview of stare decisis. The practice of Canadian citation (by lawyers and by judges) of American authorities will be discussed. The seminar will also cover case law research using print secondary source materials, paid/ electronic subscription resources, free internet-based resources, US court documents and will look at US legal citation.

You will be experienced in building effective working relationships and managing staff, will have excellent knowledge of legal resources and legal publishers, and an informed commitment to the aims of library support in a major academic institution.
