Upcoming Event: Out of the Stacks

Out of the Stacks is thrilled to extend an invitation to all library and information professionals in the Lower Mainland to attend our inaugural social meet  on June 23rd.

Out of the Stacks is an informal networking group of information professionals created in April 2016 to foster connections and build community in BC's Lower Mainland. Our aim is to organize and sponsor fun social gatherings in Vancouver open to information professionals of all ilks, and create a space for those working in the library and information sector to get together and form new connections outside of the workplace.

A chat over the professional fence: embeddedness & evidence as common concepts in law and medical libraries

Please join VALL for our June seminar “A chat over the professional fence: embeddedness & evidence as common concepts in law and medical libraries” where guest speakers Sarah Sutherland and Dean Giustini will initiate a discussion about how special librarians in law and medicine can adapt novel models of practice, and seize opportunities to work closely with client communities. An early view of what strategies have worked to change the dynamic of how information is integrated into the library's mission will be started.

Abstract: law librarians and medical librarians work within dynamic information environments that require good communication skills, a reliance on precedence and evidence and working closely with constituents. Models of embeddedness are seen throughout librarianship but law and medical librarians, as information specialists working closely with their clienteles, can share innovative practices and approaches in providing information services. This session will focus on medical and law environments and their commonalities/differences; professional clienteles, fast timelines, complex technical information structures, pressures to provide information to the public, and high stakes evidence. There are great opportunities to share strategies across sectors.

Job Posting – Library Metadata Manipulation Project

Want to work on a project where legacy library formats meet machine readable metadata this summer?

We're working on a project to convert KF Modified, a specialized library classification scheme for legal materials, into a dynamic format for use in cataloguing tools and a linked data schema. We're looking for someone to convert a semi-structured legacy word processing file into a defined XML format.

Scope?

We have a ~360 page file with some internal structure that comprises a classification scheme designed to make sense to organize book sized objects in physical space for people to navigate, and we need it converted into a machine readable format we have developed. Some automation of the conversion will be possible, but we anticipate some hand manipulation of the information will be required to get it right.

Mike Pasta, owner of Quickscribe Services Ltd., will be hosting a vendor demo at the upcoming CALL Conference on Sunday, May 15 at 12:30 in Salon DE.  

The demonstration will provide a general overview of Quickscribe Online 2.0, including a review of the new user interface and search engine. 

This is a great opportunity for those who are not familiar with Quickscribe to learn about the latest version of this popular resource.

QP LegalEze to be discontinued April 29, 2016

QP LegalEze sent out the following email this morning:

We are pleased to announce Queen’s Printer has now completed the content migration from QP LegalEze to BC Laws (www.bclaws.ca), as originally announced in March 2014 once this content migration was completed QP LegalEze would be discontinued. 

Please note:  QP LegalEze service will be discontinued effective April 29, 2016.  Our distribution list consists of our account administrators and we ask you to please share this notice within your office to all users.  A notice has also been posted on the QP LegalEze website.

Lou advises and represents private sector employers, primarily in the hospitality and retail sectors, with a particular focus on human rights and labour law. She has extensive experience responding to human rights complaints, filing applications to dismiss, resolving grievances and advising on collective bargaining. Lou has appeared before the Human Rights Tribunal, the BC Labour Relations Board, various boards of arbitration, the Provincial Court of British Columbia, Supreme Court of British Columbia and the BC Court of Appeal.

At its most basic level, information governance (IG) is the management of data across the information lifecycle. Although traditionally thought to focus squarely on records management, IG includes data security, privacy, knowledge management and e-discovery, along with related compliance and risk management issues.

However, a significant factor in IG risk does relate directly to records management, specifically the failure to appropriately manage records while allowing a “keep everything” culture to exist. Promoting data minimization and disposition requires much more than merely adopting a records management policy and retention schedule. Employees must be provided the means to comply to avoid a “rules without tools” environment.

To achieve policy compliance, organizations must address the four key aspects of records management: people, process, technology and controls.
