This year marks the twentieth anniversary of VALL; to celebrate this milestoneÂ we will be holding a "birthday party" in December. We would like to invite all VALL members, past and present to the party, but to do so we need to find the contact information for any and all former members of VALL, be they in Bermuda or the Falkland Islands.

It hasÂ nowÂ been one year since we last presented a "Cool Things" programme, so we thought we would start off the 2008/2009 VALL year on the same popular theme.Â In the spotlight this month will be Steve Matthews from Stem Legal, Wilma MacFarlane from Farris, Joanne LeckyÂ from McCarthy Tetrault, and Christina Tribe and Liisa Tella from Harper Grey, each of whom will speak for a few minutes on some cool tricks, and offer us some exciting researchÂ tips.Â Please join us for a cutting-edge information session as we begin this 20th Anniversary Year of the Vancouver Association of Law Libraries.

Subject: New Graduate Certificate in Library Sector Leadership at U of Victoria

The Vancouver Courthouse Library will be re-carpeted during August and the first week of September. We will also be getting some new furniture:
- new workstations for the computers
- new carrels for private study
- comfortable seating for the centre lounge area
The renovations will benefit all library users in the long run; however, there will be disruption while the carpeting is being done. We have selected the least busy time of year in hopes of inconveniencing the smallest number of people. The noisiest part of the installation work will be confined to the overnight periods from 6pm to 8am but there will be a period of one week when there will be no public access computers available.
AUGUST 12th:Â Work on the entrance and centre area, plus the South end of the library (Nelson Street), including the bookshelves and study area, will begin on Tuesday, August 12th and will be completed by Monday, August 25th.
AUGUST 19th:Â Beginning on Tuesday, August 19th and running through to Tuesday, August 26th, ALL OF THE PUBLIC ACCESS COMPUTERS WILL BE UNAVAILABLE. Due to the electrical setup in the library, we will be unable to keep any of them functioning. Staff computers will be unaffected so, please ask for assistance at the front Reference Desk â€“ as always, we will be very happy to help you!
Due to construction work at the plaza level of the UBC Robson Square campus, the UBC Bookstore and Library will be closed August 2 - September 1, 2008. During this closure, materials can be borrowed and picked up at the UBC Point Grey campus, and other off-campus branches such as the St. Paul's Hospital Library. Please call 604-822-6596 for information regarding Document Delivery and Interlibrary Loan services during this time.

There are a number of publishing areas to get to know on our new website, and I'd like to share one of them today, notables.The notables area is a common sharing area where VALL members can relay some of the interesting things they're reading online.
To add something, simply start a new blog post and use the drop down menu to classify it under Notables. Then, paste in your link into the body of the post; or write some comments and add a link to the appropriate words within your text.
A very simple approach, and a good opportunity to test out the new website!
