Please join VALL for our December seminar, “How to Be a Librarian in Kazakhstan” with guest speaker Rebecca Slaven.
Rebecca is a librarian and a writer. After graduating with her MLIS from UBC, she worked at the Vancouver Courthouse Library. Her career soon had her travelling the world, first taking a position at Nazarbayev University Library in Kazakhstan, and then moving to Australia. Finally back in Vancouver after her adventures, she is currently the librarian for the BC Children’s and Women’s Hospitals and Health Centre.
Rebecca will share her experience moving from Vancouver to Kazakhstan and how it ultimately shaped her life and career. She’ll be answering the simple questions of “What it’s like to work abroad?” and discussing the larger issues such as “How her experience working in the Vancouver law library community helped her face many challenges.” So much has changed from only being allowed to use blue ink to sign documents, to librarians being financially responsible for any lost books in their subject area!
