    Please join VALL for our March lunchtime seminar, “American Court Structures, Case Law and Commentary” with guest speaker Sarah Richmond.

    Sarah Richmond is the Library Manager/ Research Lawyer at Alexander Holburn Beaudin + Lang LLP. She is also currently president of VALL and co-chair of the BCLMA’s KM subsection. Prior to her position at AHBL, Sarah completed her MLIS at Western University in London, articled at a mid-size law firm in Ottawa, and completed her LL.B. at the University of Windsor. She was called to the BC Bar in December 2013 after transferring from Ontario. As part of her role as Library Manager/Research Lawyer at AHBL, Sarah enjoys training the articling and summer students on legal research resources.

    This seminar will begin with an introduction to US court structures, judicial selection methods and an overview of stare decisis. The practice of Canadian citation (by lawyers and by judges) of American authorities will be discussed. The seminar will also cover case law research using print secondary source materials, paid/ electronic subscription resources, free internet-based resources, US court documents and will look at US legal citation.

    Place: Farris, Vaughan, Wills & Murphy LL, 700 W Georgia Street, Vancouver B.C., V7Y 1B3. Reception and boardroom located on the 25th floor.
    Cost: $30 VALL members. $45 non-members. Additional $2 fee for paying online only.
    Times: Registration @ 11:45am. Lunch @ 12:00pm. Seminar to conclude by 1:15pm.
